Spring Softball Scrimmages Fun-For-All

Snow banks, remnants of the long cold winter, lined both sides of the playing field but didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of open scrimmage teams as they enjoyed their first softball games of the spring. More than forty Men’s 50 Plus and Coed 20 Plus players turned out over the 2-day event to shake off the winter blues and play some ball!

Men’s 50 Plus Scrimmage on Saturday

Saturday was a great day for the men’s 50 plus scrimmage, with sunny skies and comfortable temperatures. Tony, Ron, Joe and Jerry from last year’s Fahgettaboutit team came with new recruits and were joined on the field by free agents to round out their roster. The Comeback Kids, last year’s undefeated champions, arrived with their full championship squad. In a surprise victory, the impromptu Fahgettaboutit team upset the Comeback Kids. It was a great moment for the winners, but might not happen again once the Kids get warmed up!

To quote Dave Rocco, who played with Fahgettaboutit on Saturday, “It was very enjoyable to beat the Comeback Kids regardless of it being a preseason game…the Comeback Kids may be a year older, but then again, so are we! It was a very competitive game with a few lead changes throughout. Hopefully, the bitter taste of defeat will not motivate the Comeback Kids to regain their undefeated ways which they displayed during the 2013 season!”

Coed 20 Plus Scrimmage on Sunday

Sunday’s game featured two coed teams who played a tightly competitive game. Despite the frigid temperatures and the unpredictable, nearly gale force winds, both teams answered each other’s best shots. One new team, the Grizzly Bats, looks to be a force to be reckoned with in the coming season. Lisa from I’d Hit that and Steve from Who’s on First also made an appearance at the scrimmage.

Perhaps inspired by their victory on Saturday, several members of Fahgettaboutit, including their illustrious Captain Dave Balzano, turned out for a practice session on field #4.

All in all, this was a great start to YSA’s 2014 season. Now we just hope and pray for the start of some nice spring weather!
