Tech Students’ Fashion Show Is out of This World

Move over Project Runway. Fashion Design and Merchandising students at The Tech Center at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES presented a worldly fashion show last night that was on par with the pros.

Fashion Design and Merchandising students each chose a country of inspiration for their designs. Carly Lembo, Lakeland, chose Sweden for her inspiration because “I love the design of the Ice Hotel there.” Millie Lazo, Ossining, chose Italy. “The fashion show has been a lot of fun to work in,” she said. “It gave me a new way to experience how the fashion industry works. It’s a bit stressful, but it’s been great working with the other designers and bringing everything to life.”

Many programs at The Tech Center had a hand in producing the show. Fashion students designed and sewed the fashions, telecommunications students produced the video and sound, and business computer technology students handled ticket sales. Construction electricity students worked on the lighting, computer graphics students produced the program and ticket design, cosmetology students did hair and makeup, and TV production students did preproduction and videotaping. For stage set and poster design, advertising art students used their imagination and skills. Animation and motion graphics students did the intro animation for the video, and law enforcement students provided security. For the post-show festivities, culinary arts students made cakes worthy of Cake Boss.

At the end of the show, teacher Lisa Tobin was surrounded by students bearing flowers. “We couldn’t have done this without you,” said one. “You’re like a second mother to us!”

Marielle Martin, Somers, one of 17 Culinary Arts students who made cakes for the reception, said her elaborate confection had 325 gum paste flowers on top. “It took a week just to make the flowers,” Marielle said. All the cakes were deemed “too pretty to eat,” but guests persevered.
