Thankful & Excited- See Why!
Working on the 1,000 Stories Campaign has been a whirlwind! See why we're excited yet nervous!
I was talking to a friend yesterday about the 1,000 Stories Campaign...
This campaign- if it's pulled off- is my opportunity to leave my own mark on my own terms. I say that in a way that comes from the best place possible! When I took on a leadership role for Relay for Life of Yorktown, I had a lot to learn quickly. I felt like I was just filling really big shoes to pull off such a large event. While I've been able to pull it off (with a TON of help), I just feel that I haven't taken the opportunity to make my own mark, start my legacy.
This campaign was born when I was looking for inspiration. It has so many sides to it. I'm going to be using the campaign to plan a massive, mysterious fundraiser. Making this fundraiser happen would make me speechless. I know this fundraiser is still such a secret from just about everybody, but it has the potential to raise such big money for Relay for Life that it would make an big impact.
Adding the video aspect to the campaign has been so interesting for me. So far, I've only filmed a handful of stories with committee members who offered to help me out with my vision. Sitting with each of them before filming their story has been so enlightening. We talked completely candid & open and I learned so much about them. I went home with so much to think about. But what's even cooler, are the messages I have been getting from people in regards to the videos. They are making a difference in peoples lives.
But this campaign can be really hard at times because this relies so heavily on other people mailing in their stories. With just 3 weeks to go, I've been getting worried because only a handful of stories have been dropped off or emailed in. I know stories will steadily come in, my own stories aren't quite perfected & finished. But it's so daunting when you have a goal of hitting 1,000 stories, and right now- you can't see getting there. It's easy to feel stressed or anxious or worried when you feel so passionately about something and there's such a chance you won't succeed.
But today, I popped over to the PO box and my first envelop was sitting there waiting for me to open! This was the first letter that came through the PO box and it was from a family I did not recognize. Which means, the campaign is reaching people. And I felt such a sense of relief and then I felt such a reminder of how far we still have to go.
I think I might underestimated the impact stories are going to make on me. I sat in the car this morning to read the ones that came in and I felt so honored. It is something truly special when you are entrusted with such personal stories, such life changing moments. I have known from the start that reading every single story that comes in would change me. But I didn't know how. I can already feel the changes & the way all of these stories are becoming a piece of who I am. I truly cherish them and am looking forward to the rest that are to come. These are making a difference on my life & they will make a difference in others.
So I want to say a very big thank you to all the people who have been sharing the campaign, who have reached out to tell me they've been writing their stories & to the ones who are going to be mailing in! It really means so much to me. If we keep sharing & keep writing, this campaign can be a huge success!
