Yorktown had plenty of top performers on the boys track squad this winter, one of them being senior Carter Humphrey. Humphrey was a Class A champion, a Section 1 champion and placed eighth in the New York State Federation Championship in the 600-meters.
"He won the section last year as a junior also," Yorktown coach Keith Smith said. "He's a tough competitor who does his best and works really hard."
Classmate Ryan Scanlon was fourth place in both the Class A and Section 1 championships in the 1,000 meters and qualified for the states as a member of the intersectional relay.

Sophomore James Shea placed eighth in the two-mile and seventh in the one-mile at the County Championships in addition to a sixth-place finish in the mile at the Class A meet.
"James broke 10 minutes in that meet (Class A), which is very good for a sophomore," Smith said.

Smith said the common denominator between the above three is their work ethic and burning desire to win. Their competitiveness and ability to push each other are other factors contributing to their success.
Yorktown's girls squad, also coached by Smith, had some outstanding performers as well. Senior Amanda Borok, a race walker, was second in the 1,500 meter event at the County Championships.
"Amanda is another of our seniors who is very competitive," Smith said.
Junior Shannon Teevens, senior Caitlin Cuevo and sophomore Fiona O'Connor were all named all-league.
Teevens placed eighth at the County Championships in the 55-meter dash, Cuevo placed fifth in the 55-meter hurdles at the same event with O'Connor being Class A champion in the high jump.
"We had a lot of seniors on the team this year, who did a good job," Smith said. "But next year, we should also have some great leadership as well."
