Unions Seek Roofer, Cabinetmaker Apprentices In The Hudson Valley

YORKTOWN, NY — Local roofers and carpenters unions are recruiting apprentices. The Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers Local Union #8 seeks 25 roofer apprentices. The Northeast Carpenters seeks two cabinetmaker apprentices.

These apprentice programs are registered with the Department of Labor. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.

Roofers

The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers Local Union #8 will conduct its recruitment from March 12-23 for 25 roofer apprentices.

Applications can be obtained in person at Local Union #8, 12-11 43rd Avenue, Long Island City, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. during the recruitment period. Applications will be available for two weeks or until 200 applications have been distributed, whichever comes first. Applications must be postmarked no later than April 6. Any application postmarked after April 06, 2018 will not be accepted. Any applicant who misses an appointment or arrives late will be disqualified.

The Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must have at least a 10th grade education. Proof will be required after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of a roofer, which includes:
    • Working from ladders and scaffolds at heights that may exceed 50 stories.
    • Lifting materials and equipment weighing up to 65 lbs. for extended periods of time.
    • Repetitive bending and kneeling.
    • Having manual dexterity and range of motion.
    • Working in extreme weather conditions, such as heat, cold, and wind.
    • Performing strenuous manual labor, including roof removal, roof replacement, and removal of roofing debris.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various work sites and related instruction.
  • Must reside in the jurisdiction of Local Union #8 at the time of application. This includes the counties of New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx, Richmond, Westchester, Rockland, Sullivan, Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, and Putnam. It also includes the portion of Hudson County east of the Hackensack River in New Jersey.
  • Proof of minimum qualifications must be in the form of original documents and must be submitted at the time of selection.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.

Cabinetmakers

The carpenters union began Jan. 29 taking applications for two cabinetmaker apprentices. In the Hudson Valley, applications can be obtained from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Northeast Carpenters Training Center, 52 Stone Castle Road, Rock Tavern, NY.

Applicants should be prepared to take a math and measurement computation test at the time of application. Applicants must bring their driver's license or other state-issued ID card, at time of application, to verify residency.

Applications must be received no later than Jan. 25, 2019.

The Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee requires that applicants:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as GED or TASC).
  • Sign a statement indicating that they are physically able to perform the work of a Cabinetmaker, which includes:
    • Performing constant repetitive motions.
    • Standing and stooping for prolonged periods of time.
    • Working in all types of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
    • Lifting and carrying objects over 50 lbs.
    • Using stationary tools, portable hand tools, and power tools.
    • Climbing and working from heights of at least 10 feet.
  • Have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction.
  • Live within the geographical jurisdiction of the Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Committee for at least 6 months, which includes the counties of Albany, Allegany, Broome, Cattaraugus, Cayuga, Chautauqua, Chemung, Chenango, Clinton, Columbia, Columbia, Cortland, Delaware, Dutchess, Erie, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Genesee, Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Livingston, Madison, Monroe, Montgomery, Nassau, Niagara, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, Orange, Orleans, Oswego, Otsego, Putnam, Rensselaer, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Schuyler, Seneca, St. Lawrence, Steuben, Suffolk, Sullivan, Tioga, Tompkins, Ulster, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Westchester, Wyoming, Yates.
  • Provide DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, if applicable, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture. If an applicant tests positive, they cannot reapply for one year.
  • Participate in an interview, if selected.
  • Be willing and able to attend related instruction at a Northeast Carpenters Training Center for four one-week periods, during each of the four years of apprenticeship.
