Walden’s Got Talent

The audience cheered wildly for the stand-up comics, glittering divas and dancing boy bands.  This wasn’t another one of those TV competitions for cash or a record deal. These stars were performing in the Walden Talent Show at P/NW BOCES in Yorktown, and the crowd couldn’t get enough.

The school’s annual talent show is a much-anticipated event, and this year’s version did not disappoint. Dozens of acts took to the balloon-festooned stage, from the school’s youngest students to those nearing graduation.

Some classes performed together as a group, such as Melissa Bayeur’s class, which danced to the song, “The Boogie Walk” and Mary Ellen Lopreato’s class which peformed “I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover.” Other classes were represented by solo performers, such as Jalyn Arias of Tom Oakes’ class, who did impersonations and Jordan Lathan of Lisa Giacomini-Essell’s Transitions class, who sang “I Still Believe.”

The crowd roared when Evan Wolfsdorf, a student in Athena Swikata’s class, jumped on stage to accompany Arturo Cruz Avellan of Judy Gillet’s class, in a rousing rendition of “Gangnam Style.” And Alexis Aguiar, decked out in a shimmering ball gown and tiara, had everyone singing along when she belted out the popular theme song, “Let it Go,” from the movie “Frozen.”

Teacher aid Debbie Canzio, who organized the talent show and served as emcee, worked the crowd, ensuring that every performer received a huge round of applause. During one particularly enthusiastic wave of applause, she shouted out, “This is what BOCES is about – this right here!” and the appreciative audience cheered even louder in agreement.
