Brief Explanation of Championship Qualification Changes

Out of the last 9 seasons (including this year), both the Girls and Boys "A" Teams (Varsity) and the Co-Ed "B" Team (JV) have won all of the Southern Division Titles.  Hence, both A Teams then qualified for the League Championships, and out of these last 9 years, the Boys A Team has won 8 out of the last 9 Titles, and the Girls A Team has won 6 out of the last 9 Titles.

The League Championships also used to be known as the TEAM Sectional Team Championships, and the top 4 racers of the winning team would automatically qualify as the 4-racer TEAM contingent of the total 12 racers representing Section 1 in the State Championships.

This year, however, there were changes (due partially to budgetary constraints) at the State and Section 1 levels.  At the State level, the total number of qualifying racers representing Section 1 was reduced to a total of 9 (6 Individuals + 3 TEAM racers), instead of 12 (9 Individuals + 4 TEAM racers), and the qualifying number of the TEAM contingent from Section 1 was reduced from 4 to 3 racers.

The only exception to the total number qualifying from Section 1 was the one extra individual “wild card slot” which Section 1 girls had won last year due to their coming in 3rd place in the State Championships (hence, this year the S1 Girls team totaled 10 athletes).  This year, Section 1 Girls placed 4th and Boys placed 5th, so there will be no “wild card slots” next year (see attached State Championships results).

The changes made at the Section 1 level included the means for determining the TEAM that goes to the States.  The League Championships became its own separate race, and the TEAM Sectional Championships was no longer based on the team records & “playoffs” throughout the regular season.

Instead, it was determined by taking the lowest team score of the 3 best Slalom racer times, combined, from all teams who had at least 3 racers qualify for Sectionals.  This opened up the possibility for additional racers from teams with losing records during the season to have an opportunity to attend states as a “TEAM”, in addition to those who qualify “individually” for States.
