Yorktown Heights Resident to Cycle 270 Miles to End ALS

Cambridge, MA – This June, Yorktown Heights resident, Mark Janny, will ride in the 15th annual Tri-State Trek, a three-day, 270-mile charity cycling event that raises money for ALS research. This will be Janny’s 3rd Trek and he plans to ride 270 miles and all three days of the event!

“I ride for my grandfather Andrew Fuchs, who passed away in 2005 after an 18 month battle with the disease. I also now ride for all the patients that I have met through participating in this event,” says Janny.

Beginning on Friday, June 23, Tri-State Trek participants will take off from Boston College, MA and ride approximately 100 miles a day to finish in Greenwich, CT on Sunday, June 25. All proceeds benefit the ALS Therapy Development Institute in Cambridge, MA who are actively working to discover and develop treatments for ALS. Last year, over 270 riders took part in the Tri-State Trek and raised over $800,000 for ALS research.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes muscle weakness, paralysis, and ultimately, respiratory failure. ALS robs people of their ability to walk, move, and speak, but keeps the mind intact. At this moment, there are approximately 30,000 people in the US living with ALS, and most survive only two to five years following his or her diagnosis. Currently, there is no cure or effective treatment for this disease.

Janny’s participation in the Tri-State Trek not only helps raise awareness for ALS, but also the funds for research necessary to develop effective treatments for the disease. To date, the event has raised almost $9 million for the ALS Therapy Development Institute, the world’s first and largest nonprofit biotech focused 100 percent on ALS research. The Institute has tested more potential treatments for ALS than any other research lab, thanks to support from fundraising events like the Tri-State Trek.
