Yorktown Patch Weekly Sports Report

Exciting week for locals in girls' lax; Huskers headed to Dutchess Stadium.

After beating Yorktown 14-13 on April 11, the Lakeland/Panas girls' lacrosse team wanted to continue their winning momentum off that game, and they did just that with an 8-7 triumph against visiting John Jay two days later, before hosting and defeating Putnam Valley 15-4 on April 14.

Leading the way for the Rebels against John Jay was Lakeland junior Megan Bradbury, who scored three times to register a hat trick. For the season, Bradbury has 10 goals.

Bradbury said the key to the victory against John Jay was teamwork.

“We were just really trying to work together,” Bradbury said. “We just were getting the groundballs and picking them up.”

“We all work together very well and talk to each other,” Bradbury continued. “We always keep each other up and everybody always tries to help each other out.”

In both the wins against Yorktown and John Jay, two teams among the elite in Class B, it took knowing how to play in pressure situations to come out on top. Those situations are ones the Rebels (4-0-1) are used to, considering they are a four-time sectional champion and were last year’s state finalist in Class A.

“At the end, we each just have this great intensity and desire to win,” Bradbury said. “We executed when we had to with the game on the line against both John Jay and Yorktown.”

Lakeland/Panas coach Sharon Sarsen after the John Jay game talked about why Bradbury was able to have the big game that she did against the Indians.

“Megan had great shot selection so she was able to come up with some big goals,” Sarsen said.

Scott has big day

Yorktown senior Lindsay Scott, a recent Con Ed Award winner, is going to be playing lacrosse at the next level at the University of North Carolina next year.

Scott, who was named All-American last year as a junior, showed why she will be playing for the Tar Heels when the Huskers (6-1) hosted New Canaan on April 16. She registered six goals and two assists in Yorktown’s 13-12 victory over its opponents from the Nutmeg State.

After New Canaan had taken a 10-9 lead, the Huskers scored four straight goals to go up 13-10 with 6:15 left in the game. The last of those goals was scored by Scott, with Aileen Kurpis assisting.

“We were able to hustle to the ball,” Scott said. “We did really well on getting the ball back on defense. Everyone was hustling. Our defense was the key to starting things up for us.”

Scott further explained how the Huskers were able to come out on top against a solid New Canaan squad.

“What we did right was we were able feed it to the cutters right away,” Scott said. “They could get the pass right off, we were just able to fake and fire. They had a big goalie so we had to fake and fire and that was a key thing for us.”

Yorktown now has a week to get ready and plot revenge for its next contest, which is at Ridgewood, N.J. at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 23. Last year the Huskers opened the season with a 20-7 home loss to the Garden State school, something that Scott remembers.

“Right now we are without our two key players, Sarah (Scott, Lindsay’s sister) and Nikki (Fioretti),” Lindsay Scott said. “We have a whole week of practice to focus on what we are going to do without them. We lost to Ridgewood by 13 goals last year so we need to step up every aspect of our game to come out with a closer game.”

When asked what happened to Sarah Scott and Fioretti, Lindsay Scott explained.

“Sarah was hurt with her back during field hockey and now just got surgery on her thumb, she tore like mid-first week of preseason,” Lindsay Scott said. She can come back in two weeks, thankfully. Nikki has mono, hopefully we will have her back for Ridgewood.”

Huskers going to Dutchess

The Yorktown baseball squad is going to have the opportunity to play in a professional baseball stadium when it travels to Dutchess Stadium for a game against Beacon at 6 p.m. Monday, April 18.

Dutchess Stadium is home to the Hudson Valley Renegades, a Single-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. The Renegades play in the New York-Penn League, which is a Class A short-season league.
