Yorktown Patch Weekly Sports Report

Schuldt stars in YHS loss; Lakeland wins in Fla.; WPBA meeting set.

After missing three games because of injury, Yorktown senior Ty Schuldt was ready to play in the Huskers’ lacrosse ,contest against visiting Smithtown West on April 23.

Schuldt showed just how ready he was when he scored a team-high five goals, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Long Island power from recording a 9-8 triumph.

“He played hard. He hadn’t played in a couple of weeks, he’s been hurt,” Yorktown coach Dave Marr said. “He was really excited about playing. He ran hard and he took his shots.”

Schuldt credited his teammates, like Conor Gately, for helping him. Gately assisted Schuldt on his third goal, which put the Huskers (5-3) up 6-2 with 9:16 to go in the third quarter.

“It wasn’t just me, it was everybody,” Schuldt said. “Everybody was playing a good game, everybody was playing really hard, and that is what enabled me to score those goals.”

Unfortunately for the host, Smithtown West scored five straight goals after Schuldt’s score to go up 7-6 at the end of the third quarter.

“We played a very good team,” Marr said. “We were up 6-2, we should’ve have been able to close out the game and win. That was a little disappointing. We gave them some turnovers in the third quarter to let them back in the game. Those are things we have been working on, but obviously we have to continue to work on them.”

Schuldt answered for the Huskers nine seconds into the fourth quarter, which tied the game at 7-7. Smithtown’s James Pannell, who scored five times, put the visitors back up by one just over a minute later.

Schuldt, with an assist from Justin Mabus, tied it up with 7:01 left in the game, but then Pannell, with an assist from Kyle Keenan, who also scored three goals, gave Smithtown West a 9-8 advantage with 1:19 remaining.

“They are a very talented team,” Marr said. “No. 3 (Keenan) is a Division I, top attackman in the country as a junior, and No. 32 (Pannell), who seemed to be on the field the whole time, was very good. They made plays at the end and we didn’t.”

Yorktown had one more chance to make a play after Pannell’s score. Schuldt won a hard fought face-off, which seemed liked minutes to decide but after a time out, Schuldt’s attempt to tie the game from the right side was saved by Smithtown West.

“The play really didn’t work too well,” Schuldt said. “They played good defense and we didn’t get the right shot off.”

Mabus, Nick Mariano and Brian Quigley also scored for the Huskers with Matthew Sialiano making 10 saves in goal for Yorktown.

After losing three straight games to tough opponents in Mahopac, Darien and Smithtown West, Schuldt and his teammates will look to get back on track against Putnam Valley at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26. It’s the second of six straight home games for the Huskers.

“We are at a low point right now in the season but in lacrosse, it happens,” Schuldt said. “You win games, you lose games. We just have to come out hard the next couple of weeks. We have a lot of home games coming up. We just have to buckle down, get over this slump that we are in. A good team will definitely get over this slump. We have to show what we can do.”

Marr agreed. “We just have to keep plugging away and clean up our game a little bit in terms of turnovers and finishing our shots,” he said. “We had some chances to score, we just didn’t make enough of our shots. We just have to keep working.”

Hornets win in Florida

Lakeland’s baseball squad spent the week in Florida, playing six scrimmages in Vero Beach in Old Dodgertown and one official game.

That game came against Terry Parker High School in Jacksonville, Fla., coached by former Hornet standout and 2000 LHS graduate, Dennis Robinson Jr., on April 21.

That pitted Robinson Jr.,versus his father and uncle, Lakeland coaches Dennis and Mike Robinson, with the Hornets coming out on top 4-3.

“Seven games, one that counts, 90 degrees every day, playing on pro fields and then playing my son, it doesn’t get any better than that,” Dennis Robinson Sr. said.

Offensively, the Hornets (4-1) were led by Brian Wallace, who went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jonathan de Marte, who got two hits at the plate, went four innings and struck out four to earn the win on the mound.

Joey Arena earned the save by pitching three innings and striking out seven.

“It was a great ball game, Terry Parker High School is a strong school,” Robinson Sr. said. “They put pressure on us the whole game.”
