📰 News we're reading

1. This Asheville 'bachelorette pad' includes a stripper pole, DJ booth (cardinalpine.com) — An eye-catching "bachelorette pad" vacation rental in Asheville's River Arts District just landed on HGTV's "Zillow Gone Wild," but its owner is wrestling with a softer short‑term rental market after Tropical Storm Helene. Local planner Joe Minicozzi has also used the property to spotlight how Buncombe County taxes STRs, raising questions about whether Asheville's tourism homes are being fairly assessed.

2. Four takeaways from Asheville City Council's Sept. 8 meeting (citizen-times.com) — Asheville City Council just approved a 'No Rent for Slumlords' rule, advanced a major Deaverview redevelopment plan, and backed a full rewrite of the city's development rules to support more affordable housing. Council also prepared residents for 2027 parking garage repairs downtown and authorized seeking $48 million in federal funds for a long-planned Asheville Rides Transit bus garage in West Asheville.

3. The 10-Coast Celebration is THIS WEEKEND! (matrixsynth.com) — Haywood Road in West Asheville will be buzzing this Saturday, Sept. 12, with free 10‑Coast events celebrating ten years of the 0‑Coast synthesizer. You can try gear at the Make Noise shop, experience a tape‑loop installation at Lamplight Studios, and cap the night with a live concert at AyurPrana Listening Room, though the show requires a free RSVP.

4. Asheville schools beat state averages, despite racial gaps (citizen-times.com) — Asheville City Schools students are outperforming statewide averages in ACT scores and graduation rates, but district leaders say closing a persistent racial achievement gap remains their top priority. Reading proficiency is slightly above the state average, while math lags, and officials describe new coaching, metacognition-focused instruction, and tutoring efforts aimed at boosting outcomes for Black students in Asheville classrooms.

5. Gun violence declined in Asheville this summer: police data (wlos.com) — Gun violence in Asheville dropped this summer, with fewer people injured or killed in shootings and fewer serious incidents than last year, according to police data. Experts credit intelligence-led policing, more filled APD positions, and state-level investments in housing and violence intervention, while stressing that the city must keep focusing on prevention despite the encouraging trend.
