Man arrested after stabbing at Asheville apartment complex: police (wlos.com) — Asheville police say a 56-year-old man was arrested after a pre-dawn stabbing at a South French Broad apartment complex, where the victim suffered a chest wound and was taken to Mission Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect is being held at the Buncombe County Detention Facility with no bond, and investigators are asking anyone with information to contact APD or submit anonymous tips.
   

2. Teenager wanted in Asheville shootings surrenders (citizen-times.com) — A 16-year-old suspect has surrendered to Asheville police in connection with two shootings at local apartment complexes that were later tied to a July 19 Biltmore Avenue attack that killed two people and injured seven. He now faces attempted murder and weapons charges, while another man was previously charged in the July 5 shooting. Both victims survived their initial injuries after treatment at Mission Hospital.
   

3. Bear that injured north Asheville resident won't be euthanized, NC wildlife says (wlos.com) — Wildlife officials say the black bear that broke into homes and injured a north Asheville resident will be captured alive and placed in long-term care instead of being euthanized. Crews are still trying to trap the bear, monitoring the Spooks Branch Road area and urging Asheville residents to report threatening bear behavior and follow BearWise guidance to avoid attracting bears.
   

4. Event Support Grants Expand Opportunities for Free Arts Programming in Asheville (theurbannews.com) — If you're planning a free arts or cultural event in downtown Asheville's public spaces, the city is now taking Event Support Grant applications through October 13, 2026. Nonprofits and eligible businesses can seek thousands of dollars to cover City fees for 2027 events, helping keep Asheville's outdoor spaces lively, inclusive, and full of free programming for residents.
   

5. Asheville filmmakers find echoes of Helene in wildfire (citizen-times.com) — Asheville filmmakers Erin Brethauer and Tim Hussin are bringing their documentary "Stray Embers" to the Fine Arts Theatre on Sept. 22, connecting Paradise, California's wildfire recovery with Western North Carolina's experience after Tropical Storm Helene. Living in West Asheville during Helene, they hope the screening helps local residents process long-term trauma, community resilience, and what recovery really means here at home.
