• County fire departments receive more than $300K in grant funds from OSFM (averyjournal.com) — Banner Elk Volunteer Fire Rescue is receiving more than $39,000 in state grant funding to upgrade equipment and facilities, alongside seven other Avery County volunteer departments. These grants, drawn from a statewide insurance-premium tax fund, support the largely volunteer crews who respond to fires and emergencies across Banner Elk and neighboring communities. Residents benefit through better-equipped first responders without new local taxes.
