📰 News we're reading

• Growth concerns could lead to enrollment changes within Wake County school district (abc11.com) — Families in Cary should know that Wake County school leaders are proposing enrollment changes that could affect more than 13 schools, including those feeding into Panther Creek High on McCrimmon Parkway. An open house at Panther Creek High from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday will explain the plan, which aims to open Morrisville High, realign feeder patterns, and ease overcrowding in fast-growing areas. Parents are encouraged to attend and share feedback.

• Residents 'relieved' after Cary approves safety project at crosswalk where a person was killed (wral.com) — Cary has approved a $50,000 project to add flashing-light signs at the Ederlee Drive and Peregrine Place crosswalk where a 76-year-old neighbor was killed, with installation expected in October. This temporary fix will stay in place until NCDOT installs a full traffic signal, currently planned for 2028 but possibly sooner, and neighbors are also asking the town to plant a memorial tree.

• 'Poured jet fuel on AI:' NC's secret weapon for faster audits as experts urge human oversight (wral.com) — North Carolina's state auditor is using artificial intelligence to speed up financial audits, including recent reviews that examined Cary alongside other towns. Speaking to the Cary Rotary Club, he described how machine learning flags suspicious transactions much faster, while experts warn that humans still must verify AI's findings. The office is also studying how AI might expose weaknesses in state billing and data systems.
