Protesters Gear Up for Tuesday’s Commissioners Meeting In Davidson

Davidson commissioners are holding a public hearing Tuesday on a controversial hotel development plan.

DAVIDSON, NC -- Protesters will be demonstrating at Tuesday night’s meeting of Town of Davidson commissioners, who are holding a scheduled public hearing on a development plan that is riling up pushback in the community.

Members of the grassroots Save Davidson group have invited members of the community to converge at Town Hall at 5 p.m. in protest of development plans for the Lake Norman town that include a four-story, 115-room hotel, as well as retail space on a 2-acre parcel of land on the corner of Griffith Street and Davidson Gateway Drive.

The site, however, is directly across the street from the lower grade building of the Community School of Davidson and has stirred community concerns about increases in traffic on already congested roads, the scarcity of public parking and general safety issues given the proposed hotel’s proximity to young children.

The peaceful protest is scheduled to last one hour before the 6 p.m. meeting in the Town Hall Board Room at 216 S. Main Street. The agenda for the Sept. 12 meeting can be found here.

The Town of Davidson hosted a site walk and community presentation Aug. 4 for citizens interested in learning more or voicing concerns about the development plans. “The developer hosted a public input session in October 2016, and their plans have evolved based on citizen feedback since then, so we plan to update citizens on the project and receive feedback so we can share it with the Davidson Board of Commissioners,” Davidson’s Planning Director Jason Burdette said last month.

You can find more information about the history of the project here.
