Happy Reel Film Day Durham!
First, today's weather:
Clouds breaking for some sun. High: 69 Low: 59.
Here are the top five stories today in Durham:
- The Belmont Apartments near Duke University has seen its second armed robbery in a month. The second incident targeted two residents who were coming home around 10:00 pm on Wednesday night. Two men wearing ski masks forced their way into the home, stole electronics, and attempted to steal bank funds. The owner of the apartments is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the identification of the two men responsible, and they will be providing an increased security presence for residents. - Durham leaders voiced support for the ShotSpotter gun detection technology during the budget retreat session. The first three months of the technology would be a part of a free trial, with the remaining nine months costing the city $197,500. As gun violence continues to be an issue throughout the city, councilman Leonardo Williams expressed that the waiting and listening is done and now is the time to act, "while folks are getting shot and killed on a weekly basis." (CBS17)
- Three individuals were stabbed on Friday morning at a Durham nightclub, 9ONE9. The Durham Police Department said that all three of the victims were rushed to the hospital, one with life-threatening injuries. Investigators have not released any additional information and are still working to figure out what happened. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers. (abc11)
- On Thursday, the State Board of Education approved the latest round of proposals for the state's $3.6 billion American Rescue Plan funds for K-12 education. Of the funds, $36 million will go to a Summer Career Accelerator program, $36 million to before and after school math programs for 4th-8th grade students, $7.3 million to investigate students who disappeared from school during the pandemic, $5 million for turnaround efforts, $2.5 for middle school reading programs, and $400,000 for career and technical education in hospitality. (WRAL)
- U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder approved an agreement that will help tens of thousands of North Carolinians regain driving privileges. The settlement was signed and disclosed on Thursday as an and to a 2018 lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of North Carolina's practice of revoking licenses of people for the inability to pay. The DMV estimates there are 57,000 people with revoked licenses with failure to pay as the only obstacle to reinstatement. (WSOC-TV)
