Happy Innovation Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Breezy and warmer in the p.m.. High: 64 Low: 51.

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. Durham's 911 center has begun the process to renew accreditation. The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) formally began the assessment on Monday. The assessment occurs every four years and lists 207 standards for public safety communication centers. (abc11)
  2. Durham Tech Community College announced that they will be building a 124-unit affordable housing development near its main campus. A 2019 survey revealed more than 50% of students had experienced some form of housing insecurity the year prior, with nearly 20% reporting being homeless at some point within that year. The development will serve students and the broader Durham community. (WRAL)
  3. Doctor Cameron Wolfe, a Duke infectious disease specialist says that COVID treatments are becoming easier for high-risk patients to get. The government purchased hundreds of thousands of doses of a new monoclonal antibody treatment to keep options available as BA.2 or "stealth omicron" is beginning to spread. Other types of COVID treatments are becoming more readily available, whereas a month ago they were restricted to heavily immunosuppressed people. (CBS17
  4. 31 firefighters responded to a home fire on Angier Avenue in southeast Durham. The blaze was extinguished in about 10 minutes but crews were on the scene for nearly two hours to put out "hot spots." The Red Cross will be helping displaced occupants, and no one was injured. (CBS17)
  5. Durham police officers have been conducting lidar speed enforcement operations to help reduce serious and fatal crashes in Durham. More than half of the fatal crashes in 2021 involved excessive speed, and last Friday officers charged seven drivers with going 20-plus mph over the posted work zone speed limit. (Durham Police Department Facebook) On Sunday morning, around 12:50 am one passenger was killed in a single-vehicle crash after police believe that the driver lost control of his sports car in a curve on the off-ramp of Interstate 40. (CBS17)
