🌱 911 Dispatch Seeks Aid + Durham Schools PAL Program

Here are the top stories today in Durham:

  1. A shooting on Friday night in Durham left one injured. Police responded to E. Pilot Street just before 11:40 pm. The victim was found suffering from non life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Police have not released further details. (CBS17)
  2. Durham 911 reached out to the police department to help with dispatching calls. The Durham Emergency Communications Center now has 40% of its 911 operator positions vacant. The interim police chief, Shari Montgomery expressed that the police department did not have the staff to aid the dispatch center. (CBS17)
  3. Students at four local elementary schools that were among the most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic will begin receiving extra support through the City of Durham and Durham Public Schools. The city will be using $539,000 in federal Community Development Block Grant Coronavirus funds to support the DPS Promoting Academic Learning (PAL) program. (City of Durham Facebook)
  4. The Durham Police Department is looking for help locating 65-year-old Edward Dana Kersey. Kersey was last seen on October 9 on South Alston Avenue. (Durham Police Department Facebook)
  5. The Launch Place RTP has selected the winners of it's 9th Annual Big Launch Challenge Pitch Competition. The competition saw 64 applications. and the top 10 competitors pitched their ideas at the NC Biotechnology Center on Thursday. The first prize went to LiRA, Inc., for their development of voice restoration software through an AI-based lip-reading platform. (WRALTechWire)
