Here are the top stories in Durham today:
- A group of Republican House members have announced that they will be launching a fraud investigation into NC Elections. Republican Jeff McNeely conducted a "random drawing" of a county name out of a hat and choose Durham County. The House members have cited "many, many millions of accusations of machine tampering and votes being switched." (WCNC)
- Duke University's first library has received a $10 million grant that will allow for renovations for the first time since it was built in 1927. The construction was originally planned for summer of 2020 but had to be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can see more about the renovation here. (CBS17)
- Brenntag, a chemical wholesale company has taken responsibility for the acid-like substance sprayed on NC Highway 147 last week. According to the company, some of its employees were depressurizing and disconnecting an empty sulfuric acid railcar, and some acid vapor was released from the railcar. (WRAL)
- A proposal for Durham's Hayti neighborhood would make it home to an equity education research hub. A group of locals are targeting a 2,000 acre site near the Fayetville Street interchange for the Durham Global Equity Project. The backers submitted the proposal to the Durham Housing Authority which owns part of the site. (WRAL)
- Day care centers may soon see a major boost from federal funding. Governor Roy Cooper announced on Thursday that North Carolina will receive $805 million from the American Rescue Plan. The money will give North Carolina day care centers the ability to apply for a grant that could award up to $60,000 per quarter depending on needs. (abc11)
