Happy National Poinsettia Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and cooler. High: 52 Low: 26.

Here are the top stories today in Durham:

  1. Durham's police chief Patrice Andrews, has been officially sworn in after more than a month on the job. The ceremony took place on North Carolina Central University's campus on Friday evening, and was a homecoming for Andrews who was a student at NCCU. (CBS17)
  2. With multiple incidents at The Streets at Southpoint, community leaders are calling to address the violence in Durham. Minister Paul Scott says that these incidents are bringing light to the issue because it's a "more ritzy area," but in "less affluent areas" it happens every night. (CBS17) Although the two incidents in the last weeks have been highlighted, from the start of 2020 through November, more than 1,330 calls were made to the Durham Police Department from The Streets at Southpoint mall. (CBS17)
  3. Communities in Durham are working to understand the effects of air-quality in the city. Max Cawley, program manager at the Museum of Life and Science, in partnership with Clean Aire NC, has installed a several air quality monitors in homes across Durham. The sensors track an invisible air pollutant that can cause negative health effects. (abc11)
  4. Durham Public Schools has a lesser-known school, the Hospital School operating out of Duke University Hospital. During the pandemic, the school's services were in higher demand with hospitalized students. Michael Somers, the principal, expressed that the goal is to keep students connected to their home schools, as the Hospital School is "just a stop, not a final place." (WRAL)
  5. Although crime is up in Durham, the crime rate among young people is below the state average at 13.86 per 1,000, compared to 18.08 per 1,000. Jim Stuit, Durham's gang reduction strategy manager expresses that this shows some success with gang intervention and violence prevention programs. (WRAL)
