Here are the top five stories today in Durham:
- The Durham County Board of Commissioners Chair Brenda Howerton presented the annual State of the County address on Monday night. The address was in person for the first time in three years, and Howerton applauded the resilience of the community and noted the economy's recovery. Howerton also addressed some of the long term plans that are included in the 2021 budget as well as upcoming priorities. (INDY Week)
- Durham police responded to two deadly shootings that took place within about an hour of one another on Tuesday night. The shootings do not appear related or random. The first was reported just before 9:15 pm on Alston Avenue at the intersection of Holloway Street. A male on a scooter and a teenager in a car were shot, and the adult later died at the hospital. Just before 10:00 pm, officers responded to West Carver Street to find a woman who had been shot and died at the scene. (CBS17, abc11)
- On Wednesday Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews held a media briefing to discuss recent incidents. "Violent crimes have been on the rise in our community and nationally. The city of Durham is not immune to this continued trend," said Andrews. The DPD has made the decision to form a secondary specialized unit to further address the violent crimes and gun violence. (WRAL)
- The Durham Housing Authority rejected a plan earlier this year that would develop a residential, educational, and commercial hub near downtown known as Hayti Reborn. Last week, the director of the group behind the effort asked the Durham City Council to intervene. In an email from the director of the Hayti Reborn project, they asked council members to issue a city injunction on Fayette Place, asking the DHA to immediately cease and desist all current negotiations until the matter is settled in a public hearing.
