First, today's weather:

Mild with plenty of sun. High: 66 Low: 45.

Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. North Carolina Senate leaders released a statement on Wednesday that they will be pursuing bipartisan negotiation on new district maps. The new maps will still need to pass the state House and Senate, and House Speaker Tim Moore stated that he expects votes in his chamber on the maps next week. (abc11)
  2. In 2021, the traffic deaths in North Carolina were the worst in 15 years. Some types of crashes saw a decrease over 2020, however the increase in fatalities attributed to speeding, distracted driving, and occupants not wearing seatbelts rose significantly. (Spectrum News 1)
  3. On Wednesday two Durham men were arrested after leading police officers on a car chase. Officers found the vehicle that had been reported stolen and attempted to make a stop when the driver fled. The vehicle was stolen in a carjacking on Sunday and the chase ended at a dead end on Moreland Avenue. The driver and passenger were both arrested. (CBS17)
  4. Durham's 2021 Gang Assessment Report was presented on Wednesday afternoon. The new study has shown that 85% of people surveyed had family members involved in gangs, and 34% of high schoolers and 19% of middle schoolers reported gang activity in their schools. The assessment recommends focusing resources on 12 neighborhoods experiencing high rates of violent crime. (WRAL)
  5. A Frontier flight from NYC had to divert to Raleigh-Durham International after a passenger became violent. Officials say the man began threatening other passengers after complaining about a woman in a seat behind him. Other passengers had to hold the man down and the Raleigh police were waiting to take him into custody when the flight landed. (WSCO-TV)
