Here are the top stories today in Durham:

  1. North Carolina Central University was one of several Historically Black Colleges and Universities that received a bomb threat on Tuesday. The University was evacuated on Tuesday night due to the threat, and after almost four hours the all-clear was given to return. Most students have not moved back to campus yet, but students and employees received the alert to clear out. (abc11)
  2. A woman was killed by Durham County deputies after aiming a shotgun at them and refusing to put it down. The Durham County Sheriff's Office is at the beginning of the investigation as to what transpired and is asking the public to allow time for the facts to come out. (The Olympian: Possible Paywalled Content)
  3. It has been more than three weeks since the deaths of Isijah Carrington and Ariuna Cotton and on Tuesday the Durham Emergency Communications Center released more than a dozen 911 calls that reveal new information regarding the event. The audio reveals that the young people were riding in the stolen vehicle when they were fired upon causing them to hit a pole. Callers reported hearing up to 50 gunshots. (CBS17)
  4. 2021 ended as the most deadly year on record for fatal shootings, but still saw about 18 percent less shooting incidents overall reported to police. 2022 has already seen multiple deaths as a result of gunfire. The increase in fatal shootings has coincided with staffing troubles at the Durham 911 call center. (CBS17)
  5. Durham is the latest of 10 cities to achieve Bloomberg Philanthropies What Works Cities Certification. The certification evaluates how well cities are managed by measuring how much city leaders incorporate data and evidence in decision making. (The City of Durham Facebook)
