🌱 C-Section Saves Mom, Baby + Clay Aiken Runs for Congress

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

(Patch)

Good Morning Durham, it's National Human Trafficking Awareness Day.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sun, but cold. High: 37 Low: 19.

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. The Durham woman who was injured in a hit-and-run on Saturday night is stable after doctors performed an emergency C-section to save her and her baby. Heven Rooks was able to get out of her vehicle and run back to her boyfriends house after the crash. Police are still investigating the incident. (CBS17)
  2. Former American Idol contestant, Clay Aiken is running for North Carolina's proposed 6th Congressional District seat that represents Durham and Orange counties. If Aiken wins he will replace Rep. David Price, "to deliver on needed progressive policies." (WCNC)
  3. Approximately 1/3 of nursing homes across North Carolina are reporting a shortage of nurses and aides. Right now the workforce shortage is the highest that it has been during the pandemic. Wake, Durham, and Cumberland County are better than the state with less than 20% of facilities reporting a shortage, but the decrease has been ongoing. (abc11)
  4. A Wake County Sheriff's deputy has been fired for his role in a Durham incident involving a gun back in mid-April. Jordan Christopher Maith pointed a personal gun while off duty during the incident. The investigation that Sheriff Gerald M. Baker opened "culminated in Maith's termination." (CBS17)
  5. The eastbound lanes of I-40 near RDU were shut down on Monday morning due to a 7-vehicle crash. The crash occurred around 9:00 am and the lanes were closed until late Monday morning. Troopers are still investigating the crash and at least three people were injured, but none with life-threatening injuries. (HeraldSun: Possible Paywalled Content)

From my notebook:

  • Although National Human Trafficking Awareness Day doesn't carry the lighthearted fun of some of my other holiday features, I'm super passionate about it and it's important to know about available resources. Thankfully Project No Rest is doing a lot of work to prevent it in our State.
  • Triangle Biotech Tuesday is holding a networking event today from 5:15 pm - 7:30 pm.
  • Durham County Library's will be closed Monday, January 17, 2022 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. (Facebook)
