Here are the top stories today in Durham:
- After a whirlwind of court activity on Monday surrounding candidate filing for the 2022 primary elections, the North Carolina Supreme Court has suspended candidate filing again. The court granted an injunction that will suspend filing until May 17. (WRAL)
- Durham's mayor and city council held a work session to discuss crime, the 911 call center and police officer shortages, as well as firefighter pay. (CBS17)
- A Durham home was destroyed on Wednesday night after a cooking fire turned into a massive blaze. One individual was able to escape the fire without injuries, but the home was left heavily damaged after firefighters extinguished the blaze. (CBS17)
- Durham residents have brought up the possibility of filling some of the vacant police officer positions with unarmed responders instead. City Councilor Jillian Johnson shared a story regarding the idea earlier this week, and expressed that "over 94% of Durham's 911 calls are not related to violent crime." (WNCT9)
- Duke Health Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Cameron Wolfe is warning North Carolina that he expects the Omicron COVID-19 variant to be in North Carolina in the next week or so. With that prediction he and other experts are pushing for booster shots. (abc11)
