🌱 Child Dies In Cary Blaze + Wake County SPCA's Unique Surgery

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, Durham! My name is Kathy Mandell and I'm filling in today for my colleague, CJ Fullford. Let's get your Wednesday, March 9, 2022 started with the Durham Daily.

First, today's weather:

Cooler with periods of rain. High: 54 Low: 43.

Here are the top four stories today in Durham:

  1. An apartment fire in Cary took the life of a 9-month-old baby. The child's mother is hospitalized in critical condition after a fire broke out on the second and third floors of an apartment complex near South Hills Mall and Crossroads late Monday afternoon. Several people were trapped in the building, and at least one jumped to escape the flames. Firefighters pulled three people out of the flames. There were 12 apartment units damaged, and 30 people have been displaced from their homes. The cause of the blaze is under investigation. (WRAL)
  2. Durham Public Schools has become the first North Carolina school district to hire a transportation planner. The new position was created to address the tasks of transportation equity and safety, deemed as critically important to the district. The new position was filled by Kristen Brookshire, who started the job on February 3. Brookshire brings with her over a decade of experience at the UNC Highway Safety Research Center. (CBS17)
  3. Avelo Airlines will soon be offering nonstop service from Raleigh-Durham International Airport to New Haven, Connecticut. The new routes will start May 26, and will operate five days a week at first, then expand to six days a week by mid-June. Introductory fares start at $49 including taxes and fees, but to get this rate you have to book by March 22. Avelo will be the 13th airline serving RDU. (WRAL)
  4. The SPCA of Wake County did an interesting surgery on a homeless hound on Monday. The dog, named Lenny, received life-saving skin graft surgery using skin from a fish! Lenny had a necrotic wound under his fur when he first arrived at the shelter, and a buck shot injury in his back hip. Lenny had to have his back right leg amputated, and he also had a large burn wound. An SPCA spokesperson says Lenny is expected to fully recover, and he's a really sweet dog who'll be in need of a forever home soon. (WRAL)
