Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. Durham Police solved nearly 50% of the homicides in 2021, an increase over the percent solved in 2020. Durham Police have only solved 20% of the 795 shootings that occurred in 2021 an increase over the 12% solved in 2020. DPD believes that creating the centralized violent crime unit in September 2020 has helped investigators identify suspects and trends. (CBS17)
  2. The PNC Foundation announced on February 1 that they made a major investment to five North Carolina Historically Black Colleges and Universities. North Carolina Central University is among those that will receive a portion of the money over three years to help introduce new programs, opportunities, and advanced technology. (abc11)
  3. A man and juvenile were arrested in a string of armed robberies that occurred on Saturday. The spree started just before 8:00 pm at the Willowdale Apartments. While investigating the final robbery, police spotted the dark Toyota Camry close to the last robbery and followed the vehicle. After a car chase with police, the driver crashed in the woods and officers were able to apprehend the suspects. (CBS17)
  4. One of Durham's Historic places, noted as a "significant building in the city" celebrated its 96th anniversary Wednesday. The Carolina Theatre of Durham opened on February 6, 1926 as the only Durham theatre to admit African Americans. The theatre became a focal point in the civil rights movement in the 1960s when it began operating without segregation. (abc11)
  5. A Raleigh woman is wanted in the Durham crash that killed her infant daughter and critically injured her 4-year-old daughter. The crash occurred in January 18, and her 4-year-old daughter has since been released from the hospital. On Tuesday, Durham police announced several felony charges that Shanelle Johnson is facing in connection to the incident and are seeking information on her whereabouts. (CBS17)
