Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. Durham County district attorney Satana Deberry took to Washington to advocate for the Bull City amidst, "a perfect storm of challenges contributing to a devastating rise in violence." Deberry expressed that the pandemic's disruptions strained institutions and organizations, and that reforms were needed to help prevent poverty and easy access to firearms in America. (INDY Week)
  2. Durham police were called to Big Leaf Way around 1:00 pm on Tuesday in response to a shooting that led to the death of one. The victim was transported to the hospital where he later died. Investigators say the shooting was not a random act of violence, and ask anyone with details to contact CrimeStoppers. (CBS17)
  3. Durham Public Schools has hired a new transportation planner to help identify and fix transportation equity issues in the county's schools. Kristen Brookshore will work with local government and NCDOT to identify problems and find solutions. The position is the first of its kind in the state. (abc11)
  4. Durham School of the Arts was forced to learn remotely on Wednesday due to emergency water main repairs. Crews responded to the intersection of N. Duke Street and W. Trinity Avenue after a water main burst in the morning. The repairs led to water service issues for the area. (CBS17)
  5. One Durham business owner is speaking out about what she believes to be an attempt to force her business out of the area. Shea Ramirez owns one of the only Black-owned businesses in the area surrounding University Hill. In an attempt to keep customers from using its parking, University Hill has put up a fence to block passage between the residential and commercial development and Ramirez's recreation center. The complex has also filed a lawsuit, claiming damages totaling $25,000 against Ramirez and her landlord. (abc11)
