Happy National Boy Scout Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Clouds giving way to sun. High: 48 Low: 26.

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. Students at Duke University could be facing expulsion and criminal charges after lighting a bench on West Campus on fire following a 20-point win over UNC-Chapel Hill. Although bonfires are not uncommon following big wins, Saturday's used accelerants and other debris to light school property on fire. (CBS17)
  2. A Durham student was seriously injured in a shooting on Wabash Street on Sunday. Officers arrived on the scene around 3:00 pm and discovered the teen male who was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. There is no information regarding suspects at this time, and anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers. (abc11)
  3. The Durham Police and Community Safety Department has been awarded grant funding to help improve public safety responses for those who are dealing with mental illness. The Connect and Protect Program grant will provide $848,000 and requires a match of just over $356,000 to contract licensed clinicians, fund site visits to other law enforcement agencies, and pay for supplies and equipment needed for new clinicians. (Bull City Today)
  4. Although unemployment is continuing to drop in North Carolina, the number of job openings are continuing to rise. The Triangle's unemployment rate dropped to 3.7% in December and is among the lowest rate in North Carolina. Last week more than a thousand more jobs were listed seeking applicants on national job boards. (WRAL TechWire)
