Happy National Student Employment Week Durham!
First, today's weather:
A little afternoon rain. High: 74 Low: 60.
Here are the top five stories today in Durham:
- Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski coached the last game of his career after 42 seasons with the team. Although the season ended with a tough loss, fans say that the loss to UNC will not define Coach K. As Coach K and the team arrived back to campus, students and fans welcomed them home and celebrated the end of an era. Krzyzewski took the time to thank fans for all their years of support before leaving for retirement. (abc11, TheSpun)
- Major League Baseball is requiring the City of Durham to make $10 million worth of upgrades to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, or risk losing the team. MLB gave a deadline of April 2025 to make the upgrades. The Durham Bulls will contribute $1 million in renovation costs, but the city would still need to cover the other $9 million. City leaders requested a study on the team's economic impact, and a city report shows that they brought in $48.5 million in 2019. It is unclear if the city will invest in the required improvements. (CBS17)
- Work on the Greater Triangle Commuter Rail Study is moving forward after an update on Phase II of the study was presented. There is still more work needed with engaging community members, municipalities, and institutional partners. More information about the project can be found at ReadyforRailNC.com. (BullCityToday)
- Monday saw flight cancelations across the country, including at RDU. Storms in Florida slowed incoming flights, and Southwest Airlines experienced a technology issue that caused lingering delays. Monday's cancelations were actually down from the more than 3,000 flights canceled nationwide, according to FlightAware. (WRAL)
