Happy National Chili Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Cloudy, a shower; cooler. High: 51 Low: 44.

Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. The Durham Police Department is asking for the public's help identifying the owner of a white Ford Fusion SE. The car is a 2015 or 2016 model with the titanium package, tinted windows, and a temporary 30-day paper license tag. Police believe that at least three people were in the car that was involved in the daytime shooting that happened on Sunday near E. Main Street and Angier Avenue. (Durham Police Department Facebook)
  2. According to data from the Durham police and the Durham County Sheriff's Office, in 2021 nearly 900 guns were seized. The Durham Police Department's quarterly crime report also revealed that 417 guns were stolen, a 16.2% increase over 2019, and more than half of those were stolen from motor vehicles. State Representative Marcia Morey of Durham says that next year she will be filing bills that will require the safe storage of firearms, as well as a bill that will allow law enforcement agencies to destroy firearms. (CBS17)
  3. The owner of Artpost Durham, Holly Phelan created an emergency food box during the pandemic, and after uncovering deeper needs, the box has seen an outpouring of community support. A young man left a note on the box requesting personal hygiene items like razors, shaving cream, and nail clippers. After sharing a post on social media they received a huge donation that has since been distributed. Phelan hopes that the success of her box will spread through and inspire the community. (abc11)
  4. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is warning NC Quick Pass users to reconsider using third-party payment vendors. Many of the companies that drivers entrust to pay bills, are not doing so on time, leaving their customers responsible for late fees and penalties. More than 4,000 customers who used the unauthorized payment vendors were charged additional fees during December and January. (CBS17)
  5. The panel of judges tasked with selecting North Carolina voting maps made additional changes to the congressional maps on Wednesday, and upheld the new General Assembly districts. Regarding the U.S. House map, judges said that, "the remedial congressional plan does not satisfy the Supreme Court's standards." If the maps are not subjected to an appeal, candidate filing will resume today at 8:00am. (WTOP)
