🌱 Durham Gymnastics Coach Offered Plea Deal + Road Paving Begins

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

(Patch Media)

Happy Thursday, Durham! This is Kathy Mandell, covering for my colleague CJ Fullford today, March 10, 2022. Here's everything you need to know to start today off on an informed note in the Durham area.

First, today's weather:

Cloudy and cool. High: 51 Low: 37.

Here are the top four stories in Durham today:

  1. The former operator of Bull City Gymnastics stands accused of assaulting three young girls who were enrolled at the gym. Stephen Maness, formerly a Durham gymnastics coach, was indicted for sex crimes against the gymnasts. Maness was offered a plea agreement, resulting in a lighter sentence. (WRAL)
  2. Relatives of the 9-month-old baby who was killed in an apartment fire in Cary earlier this week are demanding accountability from the complex's management company. According to ABC11, some residents claim smoke detectors were not properly working, and they had reported electrical hazards within the units. Harbor Group Management Co. manages the complex, and said there are smoke detectors in every unit and they were checked on January 28. The cause of the fire has not been determined. (ABC11)
  3. Frontier Airlines has announced several new nonstop flights from the Triangle beginning this spring, including destinations in the northeast and midwest that are not currently being served by other airlines. The new Frontier flights will start in April and May. Two New York metropolitan airports, Islip and Newburgh, are among the new destinations, as well as Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Providence, and Syracuse. A Detroit flight is also on the roster. (The Herald Sun)
  4. The city of Durham Public Works Department is starting a $1.5 million construction project later this month. More than two dozen unpaved roads in the city will be paved, thanks to the project. Thirty-one roads are scheduled for repair and asphalt paving, starting soon with a projected completion date of November. There will be partial lane closures. A full list of the project sections is shown in the CBS17 article. (CBS17)

From my notebook:

  • A puppy that was shot last November, causing paralysis, now has a forever home and her unique disability is helping kids with disabilities! The mixed-breed young dog, Gracey, was shot in the rib cage, and a second bullet lodged by her shoulder. She became paralyzed in her hind legs. Gracey uses a special doggie wheelchair, has a new home with the Richardson family, and a new job — meeting disabled kids, some of whom also use wheelchairs. (WRAL)
  • A ram named Eddie has been lost in the Research Triangle Park for about a year, but he was finally rescued on Sunday. No one is sure how the animal ended up on Labratory Drive in between businesses and research labs. The Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary pushed for permission to rescue the ram for a year, concerned that he was in ill health. The property owners said he had been living on the grounds for years and they would not allow any rescue efforts to take place. But then, the company was under new management and Blind Spot was able to finally rescue Eddie. It took several weeks, but their efforts were finally successful. (WRAL)
