Happy National Dessert Day,

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny, warm and humid. High: 81 Low: 58.

Here are the top stories in Durham today:

  1. Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson hosted a press conference on Tuesday to defend the remarks he made to a church congregation. After protestors and supporters gathered outside his office, he stood by his comments, and criticized books that are available in some schools. Durham Public Schools has a copy of one of the books in its libraries, and cited the Library Bill of Rights emphasizing that "Materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation." (CBS17)
  2. The autopsy of a man found dead in his home back in July has revealed gruesome details about his death. Police are still working to identify the suspect who was pictured on video, described as a thin male wearing a white T-shirt, gray stonewash jeans and sneakers. Friends of the victim, Dumar Andre Mosquera, say he was known to frequently meet strangers on local dating websites. (CBS17)
  3. Bashir Amir Perry was arrested in Hillsborough by members of the US Marshals Service Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force and charged with the death of Aaron Dwayne Reese. The victim was found dead inside a vehicle in the parking lot of Hardee Street ten days prior to the arrest. Perry is being held without bond in the Durham County Jail. (WRAL
  4. A New Durham High School allows students the opportunity to learn through a work-study experience. Cristo Rey Research Triangle High School is part of a nationwide network of 38 Catholic high schools dedicated to providing a work-study experience and a college preparatory curriculum for students from low-income families. Unlike other private schools, admission is not limited by grades, and students do not have to be Catholic to attend. Students must be willing to wear a uniform and tie, have longer school days, and start the year early. (DurhamMag)
  5. House Bill 951 has received final legislative approval and heads to the desk of Governor Roy Cooper. Governor Cooper has already tweeted that he will be signing the energy legislation that will require the Utilities Commission to take steps to reduce carbon emissions by 70% by 2030. The bill has received bipartisan support. (WBTV)
