🌱No Gun Violence Comment From Mayor + Stolen Puppy Returned

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

Happy National Dog Biscuit Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Showers in the morning. High: 71 Low: 51.

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. Durham Mayor Elaine O'Neal during a virtual city council meeting said she will not comment on gun violence in the city any time soon. The meeting followed a weekend that wounded five to gun violence, but O'Neal says that speaking publicly would compromise the trust-building relationship between the government and people they are dealing with. Residents expressed frustrations and hurt with the city's dealing with gun violence. (WRAL)
  2. New details have come to light in the fatal home invasion that occurred early on Sunday. Police believe the home invasion was planned and reported that the lights were turned out to the entire building before the door was kicked in. Family of Aaron Bailey remember his laugh and ability to make others smile. (WRAL)
  3. Durham police are looking into a crash that took the life of Jeffrey Clemmons on Friday afternoon. Police said he was driving west on NC 54 when he collided with the rear bumper of a Toyota C-HR that ran off the road and crashed into tress. Clemmons' vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into a Honda CR-V, then a fourth vehicle collided with Clemmons' vehicle and the CR-V. No charges have been filed and the crash is still being investigated. (WRAL)
  4. Lazuli, the puppy taken from the Animal Protection Society of Durham, has gotten her happy ending. The puppy was not injured after being stolen and a few days after being returned, Lazuli was adopted. (CBS17)
  5. Republican legislators are asking a panel of judges in Wake County to disqualify two assistants who were hired to advise in the gerrymandering case. The Special Masters who were selected are not supposed to have communication with parties involved, however the two in question were hired by plaintiffs in the lawsuit. An attorney for Republicans in the legislature requested that they be removed, and all work produced by the masters in question be destroyed. (CBS17)
