🌱 Durham Rescue Mission Easter Celebration + 17 Year Cold Case Solved

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

Happy Husband Appreciation Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Not as warm; an a.m. t-storm. High: 67 Low: 54.

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. The Durham Rescue Mission held its annual Easter celebration on Friday. With the cost of inflation soaring, many families are struggling more than usual and parents were excited to get an Easter basket for their children. Volunteers helped cook 900 pounds of pork for barbecue, and around 3,000 hot dogs to give out to families as the event returned to in-person festivities for the first time since the pandemic. (CBS17, abc11)
  2. Durham police have made an arrest in a 17-year-old cold case following a DNA retest. Investigators have been taking second looks at thousands of old sexual assault case files, and during the process investigator Winston Hunt noticed something that caught his attention. The hunch has now led to an arrest. Timothy Rorie was a DNA match to the cold case, and is already in the system from a 2008 charge. (WRAL)
  3. In spite of hiring efforts the Durham Police Department is struggling to fill vacancies. There are currently 102 vacancies in the DPD, leaving fewer officers to respond in the recent violent crimes. With fewer officers available, response times could be longer for lower priority calls. (CBS17)
  4. One person has died with another injured in a shooting that took place at Cadence at RTP. The apartment complex is especially popular among N.C. Central students and was also the site of a February home invasion and shooting. Police have not released further details regarding the incident. (WRAL)
