Here are the top four stories today in Durham:

  1. The Durham Rescue Mission hosted a New Year's Day lunch for all of the men at its men's campus. The lunch featured pot roast, collard greens, black eyed peas, cornbread, and cheesecake. Alongside foods that promise luck, Durham Rescue Mission encouraged clients to make resolutions and commitments in the New Year. (abc11)
  2. Durham police are investigating the second and third deadly shooting of 2022 after two men were found dead at the parking lot of the Extended Stay America on South Miami Boulevard. This incident is the fifth known shooting of New Year's weekend. (WRAL)
  3. On Saturday afternoon a man was hit by gunfire after his sister was involved in a domestic dispute. The domestic violence incident occurred at the Extended Stay America on N.C. 55, off of I-40, and the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was arrested. (CBS17)
  4. Many North Carolina groups are celebrating a win as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is requiring chemical companies to test PFAS (widely used, long lasting chemicals, components of which break down very slowly over time). The EPA is using federal authority to require chemical companies to begin testing what risk PFAS chemicals may present to humans. The companies will be required to fund the research and disclose results to the government. (Star News Online: Possible Paywalled Content)
