The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

Happy Take A Walk Outdoors Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Cooler with a few showers. High: 45 Low: 24.

Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. On Tuesday, Interstate 85 northbound was shut down four hours after a crash caused the death of a 3-month-old and critically injured a 4-year-old. The accident was caused when the driver of a Volkswagen attempted to pass another vehicle, clipping the left rear corner, and flipping her vehicle multiple times. Both children were ejected from the car during the crash, and the driver is now being charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, careless and reckless driving, and failure to secure a passenger under the age of 16. (abc11)
  2. The long awaited East End Connector is slated to be open to traffic this spring. Liam Shannon, resident engineer with the state Department of Transportation says that although the opening has been pushed back several times, the last obstacle should be able to be completed by this spring. The corridor will link N.C. Highway 147 to U.S. Highway 70 through an interstate-grade connection. (WRAL)
  3. New weather models released Wednesday are predicting the triangle could see between 2-5 inches of snow on Friday. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for the Triangle through Saturday morning. (WRAL)
  4. On Tuesday, Democrats stifled Republican efforts to further delay the state's primary, stating that the matter should be left to the state Supreme Court. Governor Roy Cooper also seemed to criticize the attempt, that if successful, he would have the ability to veto. House Minority Leader Robert Reives expressed that they should wait for the Supreme Court decision before moving the election. (WNCT9)
  5. Former teacher, Justin Poindexter is working to "restore the love back to the community" by cleaning up Durham's streets. According to Poindexter, studies show that a clean environment improves self-worth and if an area is clean there's less likely to be a negative narrative about it. Touched by Mayor Elaine O'Neal's words following the shooting that took the life of two teens and injured four others, Poindexter was inspired to make a difference. (INDY Week)
