Happy International Chefs Day Durham,
First, today's weather:
Sunny and pleasant. High: 77 Low: 49.
Here are the top stories today in Durham:
- The Durham City Council approved permanent expanded outdoor dining during its Monday night meeting. The expanded outdoor dining allows city-owned, on-street parking spaces to be used for dining, but does not extend to green spaces or parking decks. Business owners and residents surveyed showed more than 80% were in support of using parking spaces for things other than parking. They also approved an annual pay increase of $10,000 for themselves. (WRAL)
- The Triangle is ranking high in national surveys. The 2021-2022 Best Places to Retire in the US list ranked Raleigh & Durham combined in the #22 spot. (US News) In another ranking created by the Wall Street Journal and Realtor.com, Durham-Chapel Hill was ranked #19 of the Top-20 Emerging Markets for Fall 2021. (GlobeNewsWire)
- With programs designed to keep homeowners out of foreclosure during the pandemic ending, a new report shows foreclosures surging in the Triangle. In Durham County foreclosures are up 150% from the precious quarter. The national average is a 34% increase quarter-over-quarter, with the national increase at 68% compared to the same time in 2020. Rick Sharga, the executive vice president at RealtyTrac warns of the possibility of three "small waves" of foreclosure activity. (WRALTechWire)
- The Durham County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that a man drowned in Falls Lake on Monday. This marks the fourth such incident at the lake in 2021. Durham County Sheriff's were called to a boat ramp where witnesses told them a man had gone in the water but not resurfaced. Search and recovery teams were able to recover the body of an unidentified man. (Spectrum News 1)
- The Shared Streets pilot project was launched last year in order to give families more space to walk, jog, and bike in their neighborhoods. On Monday, city officials sent emails to neighborhood leaders informing them the program would be ending on November 1, and some neighbors are asking the city to permanently close their streets to through traffic. Residents have expressed that without sidewalks, the project gave them a safe space to walk that they don't otherwise have. The city has received other requests to remove the barricades, and have concerns for the maintenance required to keep them in place. (CBS17)
