Here are the top stories today in Durham:
- On Wednesday a federal court awarded $6 million to a man falsely convicted of two murders he did not commit, after finding that a retired Durham police investigator fabricated evidence against him. Darryl Anthony Howard spent 21 years in prison until the convictions were vacated in 2016, and he sued Durham police in 2017. (WRAL)
- The Law School Admission Council awarded NCCU's School of Law a $100,000 grant to help underrepresented students better access in the law school admissions process. The funds will be used to host a summer pipeline program to offer virtual learning focusing on topics like LSAT prep and application guidance. (abc11)
- The Durham School District is looking for a new home for Durham School of the Arts. It is currently located at a facility that once was Durham High School but the building is unable to meet the needs of the growing student body. (ASUMag)
- NC TECH has released a new index tracking how competitive NC metropolitan statistical areas compare to 110 regions across the country. Durham-Chapel Hill ranked 6th based on three sub-indexes: technology talent supply, technology talent demand, and innovation indicators. (TechWire)
- All or portions of over two dozen laws that the NC General Assembly passed this year took effect as of December 1. Some of the laws include protections for pregnant incarcerated women, raising the juvenile prosecution age to 8, and requiring officers to report fellow law enforcement's apparent excessive force to a superior. (WCNC)
