Happy International Day Against Police Brutality Durham!

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. A home fire on Geer Street left one man dead on Sunday morning. Officials received the call around 6:00 am, and an older man who goes by LD was killed in the blaze. The fire is still under investigation, but according to the Durham fire marshal, the fire started in the chimney area of the house. (WRAL)
  2. Durham's Training to Work program is helping former inmates gain employment. The program is part of the N.C. Works Career Center, and works with service providers who train participants in industries in demand. The program can also provide gas cards to help secure transportation to work. (Spectrum News 1)
  3. As part of the N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program, law enforcement will be increasing patrols until March 20. The increase is meant to catch St. Patrick's Day partiers, and there will be several checkpoints along busy routes. A driving while impaired charge could result in jail time, loss of license, and an average of $10,000 in fines and fees. (abc11)
  4. According to a report from the State Auditor, the NC Division of Employment Security failed to issued $438 million in first unemployment benefit payments in a timely manner. According to the report, only about 60% of first time payments were issued within the federal standard for timeliness, 14 days following the claim. The auditor recommended DES review its claims process as the last 10 years have not met the federal standards. (abc11)
