🌱 Grant To Prevent Homelessness + Medicaid Expanded For New Mothers

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:
- The Durham Continuum of Care Providers won grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. $1,725,699 was awarded to 11 Durham-based projects. The grants will help fund permanent supportive housing for homeless persons and families, short-term rental subsidies, and Durham's Homeless Management Information System. (DurhamNC)
- North Carolina will now offer expanded Medicaid access for new mothers. New mothers can receive one year of full Medicaid coverage after delivery as the new state law expanding services took effect on Friday. Until now, women could receive 60 days of post-partum coverage if they qualified. The new expanded services can now be accessed by anyone currently pregnant or who gave birth between February 1 and March 31. (Spectrum News 1)
- The City of Durham and Keep Durham Beautiful teamed up to celebrate the 150th Arbor Day by planting trees on Saturday morning. Durham Mayor Elaine O'Neal issued a proclamation on Saturday designating the entire week of April 2 as Arbor Day. She encouraged residents to observe and recognize the value of benefits which trees provide, and promote the planting and care of trees in the city. (CBS17)
- The At-Large City Council vacancy appointment process is set to proceed as the City Council will be identifying finalists for appointment consideration. The regularly scheduled session is this coming Thursday at 1:00 pm. After finalists are appointed, the City Council will interview candidates in a special session. (DurhamNC)
