Happy Global Cat Day,

Here are the top stories today in Durham:

  1. As COVID-19 numbers are declining, experts have given the green light for Halloween celebrations. The mayor of Durham announced specific guidance. For Trick-or-Treating some plan to have grab and go stations on the sidewalks, and the mayor says that people should trick-or-treat in small groups. Patrols will ask groups to disperse if needed, and Durham Parks and Rec will also hold a series of activities for Halloween. (WRAL)
  2. Hospitals in the area have estimated that it cost millions of dollars annually due to gun violence. Cape Fear Valley, UNC, Duke, and WakeMed health systems have reported treating more than 1,000 gunshot wounds so far this year, with Duke and WakeMed having treated more so far this year than they did in 2020. (abc11)
  3. Some restaurants and bakeries in Durham are going all out with Halloween treats. If you're looking for the perfect ghoulish Instagram snacks, you can find them at Buzzy Bakes, Durham Food Hall, and more. (DurhamMag)
  4. State retirees are calling on lawmakers to follow Social Security's lead. State pensions have been losing ground to inflation since the recession more than a decade ago. Since the state's pension system is not linked to the cost of living, state lawmakers decide when and by how much to increase payments. The average annual pension check is only around $21,100. (WRAL)
  5. Durham has ranked as the 25th best place to live in a new study conducted by Livability.com in partnership with Ipsos. The study involved cities with populations between 20,000 and 1 million people. (WRALTechWire)
