Happy Singles Awareness Day Durham!
First, today's weather:
Sunshine. High: 49 Low: 28.
Here are the top five stories in Durham today:
- On Monday afternoon, a teen boy and a man were shot at a gas station across the street from Hillside High School. Police say the incident occurred just before 1:00 pm and both victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Officers are actively seeking the suspect after the shooting that stemmed from an altercation, and the school was under lockdown until just before 1:45 pm. (CBS17)
- The Durham Fire Department was called to a home on Kimball Drive just before 7:00 am on Monday. Four people and a dog were reportedly trapped inside and escaped through a window. Crews got the fire under control in about 40 minutes. The two were taken to the hospital but are in stable condition. (CBS17)
- Following the deadliest year on record for North Carolina roads, the Durham County Sheriff's Office has created a new three-member unit to make roads in the county safer. The Governor's Highway Safety Program distributed more than $18 million in grants, including a $750,000 grant to DCSO. The sheriff's office is focusing on major corridors where there are increased risks, and are increasing nighttime and weekend enforcement. (CBS17)
- That Music Fest will be coming to Durham June 24-25. The festival is being presented by That Station at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The festival boasts that it will be featuring all nationally touring bands that are from or reside in North Carolina. Tickets for the festival go on sale this Friday. (WRAL)
- North Carolina justices are now being tasked with determining if two constitutional amendments should be struck down due to illegally gerrymandered districts. The nearly 30 legislators elected to districts that federal courts declared illegal racial gerrymanders in 2016 were allowed to remain in elected positions until the next elections in 2018. During that time, four constitutional amendments were passed, and since constitutional amendments require 3/5 support in each chamber and aren't subject to gubernatorial veto, the NAACP is challenging them.
