Here are the top five stories today in Durham:
- The City of Durham is in the process of recruiting for the crisis response pilot program set to debut in July. The teams will respond to nonviolent mental health crisis, suicide threats, welfare checks, panhandling, indecency, and more. They will also conduct follow-ups with residents after incidents to help connect them with the correct community resources. The city is in the process of posting all jobs for teams. Qualified individuals can apply here. (abc11)
- On Thursday, Eric David Rolon Feliciano of Durham was arrested in connection with a multi-jurisdictional crime spree. Rolon was arrested in Orange County, and is expected to be charged in Orange, Durham, and Wake counties as well as Hillsborough. Rolon is being held in the Orange County Detention Center under a $155,000 secured bond. (CBS17)
- A Durham man is seeking help from troubleshooters and warning other job seekers about a career scam that has cost him thousands. While searching jobs on LinkedIn, Daniel LaSane applied with Cryptocurity LLC as a portfolio manager. The job entailed LaSane receiving deposits into his account that he was then instructed to invest in cryptocurrency. After the bank flagged the transactions as fraudulent, LaSane and several others are now in debt due to the fraudulent company. (abc11)
- State lawmakers believe that this time next year, residents of North Carolina will be able to legally place bets on sporting events. Governor Roy Cooper supports the move noting that the city will be able to benefit from tax revenue as many place bets regardless. Under the bill passed in the Senate, the state would impose an 8% tax of adjusted gross revenue and charge licensing fees to companies that want to facilitate betting. (CBS17)
- The Durham Police Department is receiving flack after an interview with The 9th Street Journal looked into its "relationship building" meeting with Duke football players last October. Representatives from Durham County Sheriff's Office presented a PowerPoint presentation that offended and unsettled players with misleading statistics and an incomplete account of legal rights at traffic stops. Players who sat in on the presentation expressed that the presentation "painted themselves [officers] as the victims." (INDY Week)
