Happy National Ugly Sweater Day Durham!

First, today's weather:

Here are the top stories today in Durham:

  1. One Durham Public School teacher went above and beyond for her students. Turquoise Lejune Parker raised money to purchase $100,000 worth of groceries to help keep Durham students fed through the holiday break. Parker began raising money to feed students over the holidays in 2015 when one family messaged her about their needs, now the effort is helping feed students at 12 different schools in the district. (WNCT9)
  2. Durham Public Schools is working on steps to close gaps where disparities are present. Teachers are undergoing equity training that includes things such as empathy and cultural competence lessons. Since the Equity Affairs Program, schools have seen a general reduction in suspension rates and an increase in achievement scores. (abc11)
  3. Residents at the Braswell Properties apartments were shocked when they received a letter November 29 informing them that they must leave by December 31. The current owner is in the process of selling the property and said that in order for repairs to be made, the residents must leave. Residents are fighting for more time with the help of St. John's Baptist and other community members. (WRAL)
  4. New details have been released regarding the shooting of 6 youths. The two who passed away have been identified as 19-year-old Isaiah Carrington and 15-year-old Ariuna Cotton. The group was in a stolen Hyundai Santa Fe that had a Winchester Model 88 lever-action rifle inside it. A memorial was held Tuesday at the spot where the shooting occurred.
  5. U.S. Senator Thom Tillis announced on Tuesday that through the bipartisan infrastructure package, he secured more than $458 million to invest in North Carolina airports over the next five years. Raleigh-Durham International Airport will receive the second highest allocation of funds at $14,698,288. (Spectrum News 1)
