Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. The Durham community got the opportunity to come together for holiday cheer after having to cancel last year's holiday parade due to COVID-19. This years Durham Holiday Parade showcased a diverse range of dances, floats, and guests in attendance. (WRAL)
  2. 10% of Durham's violent crime has been linked to gang activity. In 2021 Durham police expanded their gang unit and Durham City Council voted to expand the Bull City United Violence Interrupter program. Jim Stuit, Durham's Gang Reduction Strategy Manager says that there are ample resources, but many people are just not aware of them. (CBS17)
  3. Durham police are investigating the murder of a man not far from where 6 youths were shot earlier this week. Officers arrived to Holloway Street and N. Briggs Avenue on Friday to find an adult man had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to contact Investigator Sokal or Crimestoppers. (abc11)
  4. Four individuals have been charged after a stunt shut down part of Interstate 40 late on Dec. 11. A video from social media shows people standing in travel lanes while drivers performed stunts with tires squealing and smoke billowing. Footage posted around 11:00 pm that day showed traffic at a standstill near RDU while people yelled about getting the highway shut down. (WRAL)
