Happy International Podcast Day, Durham!

First, today's weather:

Partly cloudy throughout the day. High: 79 Low: 57.

Here are the top stories in Durham today:

  1. A proposed UNC hospital in the Durham portion of the Research Triangle Park has been approved by state regulators. The 40-bed hospital will be built across NC 54 from The Frontier. The hospital will also have two operating rooms, a 24-hour emergency department, and an obstetrical unit for delivering babies with two dedicated C-section operating rooms. The hospital will employ about 300 people and UNC hopes it will open in 2026. (HeraldSun)
  2. The City of Durham is looking at Denver while assessing how it approaches community safety. The Denver Support Team Assistance Response (STAR) program will be a blueprint for Durham's new emergency response program. When dialing 911, calls could be routed to a team of alternative first responders instead of police. The team in Denver has been able to successfully respond to 1,685 calls that did not require a police presence. Durham believes that a similar system can help with the more than 66,000 calls for mental health, welfare checks, and assistance. (WRAL)
  3. The Durham County District Attorney's office is not expected to seek the death penalty against the man charged in the 2012 murder of Faith Hedgepeth. A notice signed by District Attorney Satana Debbery was filed in Superior Court on Tuesday declaring the case against Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares non-capital. The murder happened more than 9 years ago, and Chapel Hill Police expressed necessity to protect the details of the case as it remains an active and ongoing investigation. (WBTV)
  4. On Tuesday Night, Raleigh-Durham International airport had to close an airport parking deck for approximately two hours in response to an attempted carjacking report. The airport says the parking deck was closed after law enforcement with the RDU Airport Authority responded to a call in the parking garage. Passengers were told to remain in the terminals and arrivals were redirected to another nearby parking lot. (WITN)
  5. The pending state budget bill has been wrapped up by the General Assembly and will now make its way to negotiations with Governor Cooper. (USNews) Within the budget proposal, there is one controversial provision that would bar City and County officials in North Carolina from passing local tree ordinances. Opponents say that the measure would result in lost tree canopy and loss of critical tree shade. Advocates say the measure is not anti-tree but rather a "procedural measure." (E&E News)
