Here are the top five stories in Durham today:

  1. Governor Roy Cooper declared a State of Emergency ahead of this round of winter storms. The declaration will allow quicker storm preparation, response, and power restoration. (WBTV) Wake, Johnston, and Durham Schools will be closed today in anticipation of poor conditions. (abc11)
  2. A third arrest has been made in the Black Friday shooting at Streets at Southpoint. On Wednesday, police announced that Lamonttae Taylor of Durham has been arrested and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. Taylor had one outstanding warrant from November 18 as well, and he has been released after posting bond. (abc11)
  3. Durham City Council approved a proposal on Tuesday that will increase pay for police and firefighters. With many vacancies still open and turnover increasing, police spokesperson Larry Smith hopes the increase will help not only recruitment but also retention. (CBS17)
  4. Durham native, André Leon Talley died on Tuesday at age 73. Talley grew up and went to school in Durham and went on to break down barriers in the fashion industry globally. Durham residents are remembering his groundbreaking successes and calling it a testament to what can be accomplished coming from Durham. (WRAL)
  5. Lawyers working for N.C. Attorney General Josh Stein are poised to ask the Supreme Court to jump back into the Leandro school funding dispute. A notice was filed on Tuesday, warning the justices that the attorney general's office plans to seek a bypass petition, to be filed as early as next week. The request would mean that the case would bypass the N.C. Court of Appeals to be heard by the highest court. (LaurinburgExchange)
