Here are the top five stories in Durham today:
- The man suspected of shooting into the SUV full of teens back in December, killing two, has been apprehended. Keon Beal was arrested on April 9 in Washington D.C. by members of the Washington D.C., Metropolitan Police Department's Violent Crime Impact Team. Beal is indicted on two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder. (WRAL)
- On Wednesday night, candidates for the Durham County Sheriff, District Attorney, Clerk of Court, and Board of Education all met to address safety concerns in the city. Violent crime in Durham is the top concern for candidates seeking office, as the DPD reported a total of 16 homicides so far this year, compared to 9 at this time last year. Statewide primary elections take place on May 17. (CBS17)
- The number of long-term care facilities in North Carolina that are understaffed went up by 13% during the pandemic. A new study shows that more than a quarter of facilities in the state are still short on staff. North Carolina is among the top third of states most affected during the past two years. (CBS17)
- As the legalization of medical marijuana has been a topic amongst North Carolina legislators, SurveyUSA polled North Carolina voters to see how they feel about the topic. The scientific poll found that 57% of voters believed recreational use of marijuana should be legalized, and 72% believed that medical marijuana should be legalized. SurveyUSA randomly selected adults in North Carolina across several regions. (WCNC)
