🌱Kidnapping Victim Found Safe + Businesses Push to Ease Mandates

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Durham.

(Patch)

Happy Fat Tuesday Durham!

First, today's weather:

Sunshine and patchy clouds. High: 62 Low: 39.

Here are the top five stories today in Durham:

  1. Two people were targeted in a kidnapping off Gorman Street in Raleigh. One of the targets ran away successfully but the second target was forced into a white Chevrolet. The victim was later found in Durham unharmed. Two men in ski masks were responsible for the kidnapping, one with a semi-automatic handgun. (abc11, WRAL)
  2. Although many areas in the Triangle have been easing mask requirements, Durham and Orange County have opted to continue mandates. Durham Mayor Elaine O'Neal said that changes could potentially happen on March 7, depending on the COVID-19 situation. Business owners have reached out asking to ease mask restrictions, hoping they can capitalize on leniency. (CBS17)
  3. Wednesday, Vice President Kamala Harris will be joined by the U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh to speak about the administration's push to create "good paying, union jobs." The exact location of the event in Durham was still unclear as of Monday afternoon. (abc13) The White House is pushing for workers to join unions, with only 10.3% of workers involved in a union last year, compared to 20.1% in 1983. (WCNC)
  4. Durham's first official beer mile is coming this spring after years of unofficial beer miles. The Glass Jug Beer Lab and Bull City Running Co will be hosting the first Bull City Beer Mile race on April 23. The beer mile will also have an accompanying festival in the park that will include food trucks and music. (WRAL)

Looking for a healthy alternative to that mid-week glass (or three) of wine? Our partners at Betera set out to create beverages that were sophisticated and flavorful enough to drink at cocktail hour but with zero hangover risk. (Their motto is "Drink like there's tomorrow.") Betera's drinks are designed by a Michelin-starred chef using natural botanicals — they're lightly effervescent, sippable, refreshingly bitter and at home in a stem glass or in a highball on the rocks. Betera offers three recipes — Rhubarb-Hibiscus, Elderflower-Lime and Ginger-Orange. We've tried all three and loved them equally — we recommend the mixed case as a great place to start. Betera has extended their 15% discount on first orders to Daily readers, in appreciation for the enthusiastic response so far. Enter Patch15 at checkout and https://bit.ly/TryBetera.

  • It's Fat Tuesday and if you're looking for a King Cake thankfully The Fresh Market doesn't require pre-orders. You better get there soon though.
